I Love Lespedeza thunbergii ‘Gibraltar’
Name: Lespedeza thunbergii ‘Gibraltar’ aka Gibraltar bush clover
Type of Plant: A perennial in most regions, this plant looks like a shrub! Hardy in zones 5 to 9, this fall-flowering plant will knock your socks off in September and October with a fountain of purple flowers! Grow this perennial in full to part-sun.
Why I Love This: This plant is so dramatic and doesn’t require much care other than cutting the stems down to the ground after a hard frost. It is the perfect plant for a slope or to drape over a wall so that the flowers and form can be fully appreciated when it comes into bloom.
A Word to the Wise: This Lespedeza grows wide. Really wide. In one summer it goes from ground level to five feet tall and ten to twelve feet wide. That’s right: ten to twelve feet wide! So give it the space it needs…it’s the perfect plant to surround with spring-flowering bulbs since the Lespedeza’s growth will cover those as they are finished blooming. Other than being realistic about how large the plant will grow it really requires no special care.

Yes, this bush clover is just over ten feet wide. Nice to plant near grasses or plants with yellow foliage.

Fast Vegetable Dishes 3-2-1
3 Distinct Flavors, 2 Cookie Sheets, 1 Oven I love serving at least three different vegetables at every meal but as we all know, sometimes the prep time for vegetables takes longer than for other dishes. I want the healthiness of several vegetables, however, and the...

When Plants Have Been Plopped
I am occasionally called to a property where the homeowner has planted things over the years without much of a plan. They aren't happy with their yard, but they have difficulty articulating why it's not pleasing to them. The problem, as I explain to them, is that...

I Love Maxibel Green Beans

Make a Nest
The weekend project: celebrate spring and create your own nest to use as a centerpiece, art object, or gift. Here's how mine looked when finished. I placed it on top of a small milk-glass vase and added three hard boiled eggs to use as a centerpiece. You could use...

What to do With Old Galvanized Watering Cans
There are some functional items that are just so aesthetically pleasing that even when they are no longer useful we want to have them around. Wine bottles, tin olive oil cans, and wooden spools for example. Sometimes we collect these things just because they are...

Cauliflower and Pesto
Do you love the taste of pasta with pesto, but don't want to consume so many calories? Have I got a dish for you. While a two cup serving of plain pasta (before the pesto is added!) has about 440 calories, a two cup serving of cauliflower is only 60 calories. Since...

10 Things I Wish I’d Known When I Planted My First Vegetable Gardens
Soil amendment such as compost or composted manure is especially important for a veggie garden. Newly spouted seedlings may get eaten by slugs, earwigs and flea beetles. This is easily preventable with an organic product: Diatomaceous Earth. You just dust a little...

I Love Nicotiana mutabilis!
Name: Nicotiana mutabilis Type of Plant: This is a tall flowering tobacco from Brazil. It’s an annual in all but very warm climates, but in places where it’s perennial it flowers non-stop and grows 6 to 8 feet high. In places where it’s an annual, such as the...
