I Love Goldcrest Cypress
Name: Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Goldcrest’ aka Goldcrest cypress or lemon cypress
Type of Plant: This is a dwarf evergreen in areas where it’s hardy – zone 7-9. It has a columnar growth habit and lime-green, fragrant foliage. In the Northeast this plant is sold as an indoor, holiday plant.
Why I Love This: The bright foliage is perfect for indoor displays at the darkest time of the year. But I also love that this plant is easy to grow indoors – and it’s easy to keep alive from year to year if you put it in a larger clay pot when you first buy it, and place it outside in part-sun over the summer.
A Word to the Wise: This is a warm zone 7 plant so absolutely NOT hardy in the Northeast. Believe me, I’ve tried planting it outside and it’s never lived, even in the warmest of winters. But it’s worth growing inside, whether you keep it from year to year or not.

Goldcrest cypress is perfect for combining with red Poinsettias or other holiday plants.

Planning the Foodie Garden
I've heard from several people that they visit Coffee for Roses only on Wednesdays, when there's a recipe or other foodie post here. Since one of my mottos is "Cook Every Day" I'm only too happy to shoot photos of what's going on in my kitchen, and share that with...

Painted Objects for Garden Displays
No matter where you live, winter can be dreary. Today it occurs to me that a great winter pick-me-up just might be found in a few cans of paint. This display of cut flowers, seen at a general store on Martha's Vineyard, pretty much sums it up. Old florist buckets made...

Kale and Artichoke Hearts Stuffed Mushroom
If you like spinach and artichoke dip, this is a recipe for you. I used frozen kale but you could also use fresh kale or frozen/fresh spinach. This is a great side dish if you are serving meat, or a main dish for vegetarians. This recipe serves 4 as a main course or...

How to Grow Cymbidiums
Keeping Cymbidium orchids alive and bringing them into flower again is actually fairly easy. At this time of year you'll find Cymbidium orchids for sale in greenhouses, garden centers, florists and grocery stores, and you don't have to be afraid that these are fussy...
