This is a question that many of my consulation customers ask. They are usually thinking about flowers, but when I’m in their yards and gardens I often point out what they are really missing. “Look at this planting,” I frequently say. “What is bothering you isn’t just a lack of bloom…it’s the fact that all you’re seeing is small green leaves.” Once this is pointed out people get it immediately.

As you walk around your yard and garden this weekend, look at the foliage without even thinking about the flowers. If you have a variety of colors and textures of leaves your garden will always look beautiful and interesting whether there are plants in bloom or not. And the good news is that your nursery and garden centers are likely to have a great selection of plants with colorful foliage.

Yesterday I was appreciating this section of my garden. The purple foliage of the Center Glow ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Center Glow'), the fine green of the Amsonia hubrichtii (which will be bright yellow in the fall) and the graceful butter yellow of the Hakonechloa macra aureola works perfectly with the larger green leaves of the Patrinia (lower left) which travels around this garden.

The blue Amsonia flowers are a bonus, but even without them this garden looks great. The only thing I’m missing is some low coleus perhaps. Hmmm…maybe I need to pick some up at the garden center today.
