Wondering what flowering annuals to plant this summer? Leaning toward pastels? We have to talk. In the bright summer sun the pinks, blues, lavenders and whites can disappear. Yes, these are lovely colors, but when it comes to the light of summer days they just don’t hold up or show up. There’s a reason that people in hot climates such as Mexico and India favor bright colors…so perhaps those of us in North America should take a hint?
This annual planting has the best of both worlds. Some pastel pinks, but some strong pink, purple and burgundy as well. Even in the midday sun in late June this garden is exciting. Mandevilla vine in the urns with Snow Princess Lobularia, go well with the dahlias and petunias in the planters. This gardener wasn’t afraid to plant with a bold color palette and you shouldn’t be either.
When it comes to summer color, by all means choose the colors that make you happiest. But do remember that in the mid-summer sun the brighter hues stand out.
