Welcome to Coffee for Roses! After this initial post I’ll jump right in with regular features including Wednesday for Foodies, and The Weekend Project on Fridays. Since today’s Mishmash Monday anything goes, so in addition to welcoming you to my new website, I want to talk a bit about thinking of your landscape as your own personal spa.

In designing your landscape think about providing plenty of places to have coffee, or any other favorite beverage, with your roses, or any other favored plants. In other words, a place to relax for a few minutes before, during or after a busy day. Here are some things to consider.

    • Be sure to place benches, chairs and tables on all sides of your house and in various locations in the yard. Each part of your landscape has unique views, be they large or small, flower-filled or serenely sparse. If you have several locations where you can sit, you will always be able to find the sun or shade that is most comfortable.
    • Is your work or home life filled with lots of other people? Consider putting a tiny table with one chair into the garden where you can go when you really need to be alone.
    • If the budget is tight, make a bench or two out of a recycled board on two large stumps or sections of tree-trunks.
    • Once spring comes, plant some fragrant annuals and perennials near your garden seats. Hosta ‘Summer Fragrance’ and Actaea ‘Brunette’ in the shade, for example, and ‘Snow Princess’ Lobularia and lavender in the sun. Not to mention roses…
Be sure to have some places where you can enjoy the garden with others, and other seats that encourage solitude.
