Most people have a window above their kitchen sink. In our house that area is open to the living room and for me, this took some getting used to. But wherever I’ve lived the window sill above the kitchen sink has been a place to display things that I enjoy. I try to regularly switch it out so that the area over the sink contains a fresh visual experience. It’s nice to have an area of the house that gets changed frequently since most furniture and accessories stay the same from month to month and year to year. The sill above the kitchen sink is a great place to display rocks, shells or other found treasures. Dishes, toys and vases of flowers get their turn in “prime time,” as do family mementos and other bits of this and that.

I like to use an assortment of small bottles on this sill, filling each with a single flower.

Here is how the sill looked at Christmas time.

Right now I'm celebrating the much longed-for arrival of spring. These Ranunculus flowers are a late-winter and early spring bloomer, so to me they call in the growing season. This year I decided that a row of McCoy and other flower pots would amplify this leaning toward spring.

In the summer we pick scads of bright zinnias and dahlias. I found some funky frosted beer steins at a garage sale and they often hold flowers on the sill above the sink.

If you’re lucky enough to have a sunny window above the sink you can include plants and herbs in your displays. Most of all, this is a place to have fun.
