Name:  Lavandula x intermedia ‘Phenomenal’ aka lavender Phenomenal

Type of Plant: A large growing, cold tolerant perennial lavender hardy in zones 3-8.

Why I Love This: This past winter was hard on lots of plants including many of the heat-loving varieties. While my Hidcote and Munstead lavenders suffered or died, my Phenomenal came through the cold and heavy snow-cover and was ready to rock come spring. With long wands of fragrant, lavender flowers in mid-summer, this plant will thrive in full sun and well-drained soils.

Check out the photo that I posted earlier this year comparing Hidcote to Phenomenal after the cold, snowy winter of 2015.

A Word to the Wise: Don’t put lavender where automatic irrigation systems will hit it frequently. Water this plant well once a week and keep it dry the rest of the time.

The backlight was just right to add a magical quality to my photo of a bee on my Phenomenal lavender.
