Name:  Birdhouse gourds aka Lagenaria siceraria
Seed Savers Exchange 0770 Open-Pollinated Gourd Seeds, Birdhouse, 25 Seed Packet

Type of Plant:  Annual vine that can be grown along the ground in a vegetable garden or over a fence, trellis or arbor. Grow this plant in full sun.

Why I love this: This is a fast growing annual gourd that is just plain fun. It looks great on the arbor or fence, is perfect for fall displays, and can be dried and used for an assortment of craft projects later in the winter or following spring.

A Word to the Wise:  When grown over a support such as a fence or arbor the necks of the gourds stay straight, so this is the preferred method for growing. Fertilize this plant two or three times during the early summer to encourage its development and provide some strings on the lower part of the structure to support the vines early on.

How can you not love the look of these gourds hanging from the arbor in the late summer and fall?

You can cover a LARGE structure in three short months with a birdhouse gourd. This is three plants that were seeded on each side of this arbor.
