Let’s face it…we don’t always have time to bake a cake from scratch. But we can take a store or bakery purchased cake and personalize it with fresh flowers. Here are some edible flowers and petals you can safely put on a cake, but be sure to use plants that haven’t been sprayed with pesticides! (Another reason to grow organically.)

Roses, marigolds, nasturtiums, violets, violas, agastache, and calendula flowers are all edible. But don’t forget about the flowers on common herbs and vegetables too! Mint, basil, oregano, lemon verbena, broccoli, squash and other herbs and veggies have pretty flowers that can be used for cake decorating.

This cake has a rosebud and violas in the center, along with the long, fuzzy, mint flowers and purple African basil. The papery-looking flowers on the top and around the edge of this store-bought carrot cake are from Oregano 'Kent Beauty.'
